De Oscars: Battle of the exes

BRUSSEL - Morgen worden de Oscars uitgereikt. Tijdens het filmhoogtepunt van het jaar belooft het een spannende strijd te worden tussen James Cameron en ex-vrouw Kathryn Bigelow, die met 'Avatar' en 'The Hurt Locker' elk negen nominaties in de wacht sleepten.

In de categorie beste film dingen naast 'Avatar' en 'The Hurt Locker' ook onder meer de komedie 'A Serious Man' van de Coen brothers en de animatiefilm 'Up' naar de hoofdprijs.

Andere genomineerden voor beste film zijn Quentin Tarantino's absurde nazifilm 'Inglourious basterds', de dramakomedie 'Up in the air', de coming-of-ageprent 'An Education', Peter Jacksons scifi-film 'District 9', 'The Blind Side' en 'Precious'.

Voor het eerst sinds 1944 maken er in deze categorie weer tien in plaats van vijf films kans op een Oscar.

Zowel James Cameron als Kathryn Bigelow werden ook genomineerd voor beste regisseur. Als Bigelow wint, is ze de eerste vrouwelijke cineast die met en Oscar naar huis gaat.

Lee Daniels is met zijn nominatie voor 'Precious' pas de tweede zwarte regisseur die daar kans op maakt. Ook Quentin Tarantino, die voor zijn 'Basterds' acht nominaties binnenrijfde, en Jason Reitman ('Up in the air') maken kans.

Favoriet voor de Academy Award voor beste acteur is Jeff Bridges, die voor zijn rol in 'Crazy Heart' ook al een Golden Globe op de schoorsteenmantel mocht zetten. Bij de actrices maakt Sandra Bullock het meeste kans voor haar prestatie in 'The Blind Side'.

Christoph Waltz en Mo'Nique zijn dan weer de gedoodverfde winnaars voor hun bijrollen in 'Inglourious Basterds' en 'Precious'.

In de categorie beste niet-Engelstalige film mocht Felix Van Groeningen een nominatie voor 'Helaasheid der dingen' op zijn buik schrijven. Wel nemen, zoals verwacht, het Franse gevangenisepos 'Un Prophète' en het Oostenrijkse drama 'Das Weisse Band' het tegen elkaar op.

'The Hurt Locker' beats 'Avatar' at Baftas

LONDON This year's big winner at the Baftas is 'The Hurt Locker'. Carey Mulligan en Colin Firth were named best actress and actor.

Kathryn Bigelow took six awards home tonight for 'The Hurt Locker', the story of bomb disposal experts in Iraq, including the prestigious prize for best film. She was also named best director and is the first woman to win this award. Bigelow triumphed over ex-husband James Cameron ('Avatar') and Jason Reitman ('Up in the air').

Carey Mulligan, who won the Bafta for best actress due to her performance in 'An Education', an adaptation of journalist Lynn Barber's autobiography, told the BBC she "didn't imagine in a million years that this would happen." Mulligan beat other stars including Meryl Streep, for her role in 'Julie and Julia', and French actress Audrey Tautou in 'Coco before Chanel'. Her award was the only win for 'An Education', despite eight nominations.

Best actor was Colin Firth, for his portrayal of a gay university professor in 'A Single Man.' The film was fashion designer Tom Ford's directorial debut. Firth outrivaled, among others, George Clooney.

James Cameron's 3D epic 'Avatar', up for eight awards, only came away with two, for special visual effects and production design.

Christoph Waltz won best supporting actor for Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'. Mo'Nique was named best supporting actress for her role as an abusive mother in 'Precious'.

Best film in a foreign language winner was French crime 'A Prophet'.

Disney/Pixar's 'Up' won the Bafta for best animated film.
