Green Day overwhelms Manchester

Fair is fair, so I have to admit that I am not much of a concert goer. Nonetheless, Green Day’s concert last Saturday in the Manchester Evening News Arena is the best I’ve ever been to.

Manchester was rocked to the core as explosive punk rock band Green Day played an amazing set, backed with fireworks, sing-alongs and spooky Halloween outfits.
From beginning to end it was more than just a concert, it was a proper party that lasted an impressive three hours.

The band set the tone for the night as they played an energised version of 21st Century Breakdown, with front man Billie Joe Armstrong adoring the overwhelming applause from the 17,000 fans present.

Green Day played twenty-nine songs, the majority from their latest album. 21 Guns was first-class, as were Know Your Enemy and East Jesus Nowhere, their latest single. Favourites from the past also stood out, Basket Case and She kept the old school fans more than happy.

The band also showed their humorous side by wearing fancy dress costumes, with drummer Tre Cool posing in a rather sexy pink bra and hat combination during their classic King For A Day.

Apart from brilliant performances, Green Day proved once again that they are one of the most gloriously entertaining bands of the moment. Armstrong demanded the crowd’s participation throughout the show, allowing for instance to let three lucky fans take over the stage.

The Manchester audience were thrilled when the American rockers covered local bands Oasis with Champagne Supernova and the Buzzcocks hit Ever Fallen In Love.
Billie Joe finished off the gig, as ever, on his own with a very intimate acoustic sequence of Last Night On Earth, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life).

The only low point of the concert were support act Prima Donna who are, to be honest, too mundane to be on tour with one of the best American punk rock bands of the moment. They were, luckily, quickly forgotten when Green Day’s side project band Foxboro Hot Tubs played a three song set, making their first ever appearance outside the US.

In short, whenever Green Day lands near your door, make it a must-see event you won’t regret!
